Mephisto in Ironheart

Mephisto Finally Enters the MCU: The path to Doom?

The latest reveal of Ironheart came as a big surprise for Marvel fans. Baron Cohen as Mephisto! Yes, the same Mephisto whose rumors have been circulating in fans’ minds since the time of WandaVision. Sometimes it seemed that he was hiding behind Agatha, sometimes it seemed that he would be seen in Doctor Strange 2. But now, finally, Mephisto has officially entered the MCU.

So let’s talk about who this Mephisto actually is. Is he Satan? Or is he some other dimension player? And what can it mean for the future of the MCU?

Who is Mephisto in Marvel?

First of all let’s clear the confusion: Mephisto is not Satan. Yes, his shape, his hell, and his vibes are full devil-type, but he is different from the Satan of Christianity.

Mephisto is the ruler of a separate dimension whose name is Hell. But remember, this is not “The Hell” that is written in the Bible, this is a separate realm that Mephisto himself created.

And Mephisto is not a fallen angel either. He is part of a cosmic demon race that was created during the time of the First Cosmos when there was nothing.

The Origin Story of Mephisto

The origin story of Mephisto is a bit mystical in Marvel Comics. Everything starts with a primordial being Nemesis. When he got bored, he used his powers to create some entities, from which some self-declared evil emerged. These included Mephisto and his demon race.

When Nemesis saw that all these beings had become so corrupt, he destroyed them and also self-destroyed himself. Fragments of his powers became Infinity Gems. But because Mephisto was his rejected creation, the Infinity Stones never accepted Mephisto.

This story was narrated by Mephisto himself to Thanos in Silver Surfer Vol. 3, Issue 45. So understand that this man has been alive for millennia, and his connection goes directly to the cosmic level.

Why is Mephisto obsessed with Earth?

If Mephisto is a cosmic entity, then what interest does he have in Earth?

That is because Mephisto is powered by evil energy negativity, sin, and corruption. The more people do bad things, the stronger Mephisto is.

Humans, according to him, are very interesting beings because they have a greater tendency to do evil naturally. That’s why he always comes to Earth to corrupt people, make deals with them, and capture their souls.

Even in the Silver Surfer comics, Mephisto had said that he would never leave Earth because it is his buffet of negativity.

Is He Really That Powerful?

Brother, don’t underestimate Mephisto.

He is not just a magical villain, but a reality warper as well. In his hell-dimension, he is even Galactus’s competition. He even kept Ghost Rider’s original version Zarathos as a slave for millennia.

And the most dangerous thing is that he is a master of soul manipulation. He is immortal. He is an expert in all levels of magic. Plus, he takes advantage of the fears and desires of other beings.

Mephisto vs Ghost Rider: A Legendary Rivalry

You must have heard the name of Johnny Blaze as Ghost Rider. He had a deal with Mephisto, after which he was tied up in Zarathos.

This story is classic, a man sells his soul to save his father’s life. Result? Eternal damnation. Ghost Rider’s journey is a rebellion against Mephisto.

And now when the news has come that Marvel is working on Midnight Sons, in which Ghost Rider will be the leader, then Mephisto’s big role seems almost confirmed.

Doctor Doom and Mephisto: A Tragic Connection

You must be wondering what is the connection of  Doom with this devil. Then listen.

Victor Von Doom’s mother was a witch. She had taken some magical powers by making a deal with Mephisto but the price became the darkest chapter of his childhood.

Mephisto had imprisoned Doom’s mother’s soul in his hell dimension. Doom then challenged Mephisto every year by learning Mystic Arts so that one day he could free his mother’s soul.

Doctor Doom’s origin itself is linked to Mephisto. And if MCU makes his solo movie, then Mephisto will have to be in it.

Doctor Strange and Mephisto: An Awkward Team-Up

Another big character who has a link to Mephisto is Doctor Strange.

When Doom asked Strange for help to recover his mother’s soul, Strange put his own soul at risk. But Doom’s lies and ego made the situation even worse.

And then Strange and Doom together tricked Mephisto and released his mother’s soul. This saga could become a visual masterpiece in the MCU.

Ironheart: Mephisto Finally Appears

And now finally let’s talk about Ironheart where we saw Mephisto’s live-action MCU debut.

True, the character played by Baron Cohen seems intense, creepy, and comic-accurate. There were rumors that he could appear as Mephisto in Ironheart, and now it has been confirmed.

This appearance is small, but its implication is big. The supernatural and mystic side of the MCU is now seriously out in the open.

What’s Next for Mephisto in the MCU?

If Marvel is smart (and obviously is), then they will use Mephisto as an overarching villain, especially during the Mystic Saga or Secret Wars.

• Ghost Rider vs Mephisto in Midnight Sons

• Doctor Doom’s origin linked with Mephisto

• Doctor Strange’s future arcs with demonic dimensions

And yes, if Blade also comes into the picture, then Mephisto’s connection could go deeper.

Final Thoughts – Will Mephisto become the new Thanos of the MCU?

Ever since WandaVision, fans have been bored with the line “Mephisto is coming.” Now that he has finally arrived, the hype is back to real.

If supernatural and multiversal themes are to be explored in the MCU, then Mephisto can become the perfect thread to connect all the characters. Doctor Doom, Strange, Ghost Rider, and Blade all have a common link to Mephisto.

What do you say? Should Mephisto be made an Avengers-level threat? Or will his job be limited to dealing and taking souls?

Let’s see how Marvel unfolds this devilish mystery.
